Avalanches in (1 + 1)-dimensional piles: a molecular dynamics study

چکیده
We numerically study the piles generated by continuously dropping a particle on the top of a stable pile in (I + I) dimension. We use a code which has an implementation of static friction in the Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations of granular material. We study several properties of the pile-the time evolution of mass and slope, and the avalanche size (and duration) distribution. We also study the effect of gravity on the properties of the pile. We find

Angle of Repose and Angle of Marginal Stability: Molecular Dynamics of Granular Particles
We present an implementation of realistic static friction in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of granular particles. In our model, to break contacts between two particles, one has to apply a finite amount of force, determined by the Coulomb criterion. Using a two dimensional model, we show that piles generated by avalanches have a finite angle of repose θR (finite slopes). Furthermore, these...

We perform a systematic experimental study of the influence of the type of base on the avalanche dynamics of slowly driven 1D ball piles. The control of base details allows us to explore a wide spectrum of pile structures and dynamics. The scaling properties of the observed avalanche distributions suggest that self-organized critical behavior is approached as the "base-induced" disorder at the ...

Experiments on 2+1-dimensional piles of elongated particles are performed. Comparison with previous experiments in 1+1 dimensions shows that the addition of one extra dimension to the dynamics changes completely the avalanche properties, with the appearance of a characteristic avalanche size. Nevertheless, the time which single grains need to cross the whole pile varies smoothly between several...

Some real systems usually drive themselves into a critical state. These systems are said to be in a state of selforganized criticality [1]. The theory of self-organized criticality aims to describe interactive, dissipative and self sustaining systems with many degrees of freedom. Hence it complements the chaos concept. These systems are characterized by power law statistics. Self-organized crit...
